Favourite things: Gaming, theatre and the Academy Awards

1. Board gaming

During the cold and dark winter months I’ve been really enjoying trying lots of board games with friends. My current faves are Takenoko, Star Wars Carcassonne and King of Tokyo. Also Ticket to Ride is a great way to round off a Sunday evening.

If you want to try different games with friends, I recommend checking out your nearest board game cafe. We’re lucky in Nottingham to have two – Ludorati and The Dice Cup. Both offer gaming in a great environment. The Dice Cup offers vegan food and cake whilst Ludorati sells wine and beer.

2. The Power

Train entertainment sorted. Thanks for the recommendation @kerryedwards

My lovely friend Kerry of Kerry Cooks, recently recommended a book to me called The Power. I started reading it on a train home from London this week and I got hooked. I’m coming up to half way through and fully recommend it for clever and and engrossing storytelling.

3. Pride and Prejudice and other great theatre

Pride and Prejudice at Nottingham Playhouse

I’m really excited about the new season at Nottingham Playhouse. Upcoming shows include The Grapes of Wrath, The Cherry OrchardEast is East and a new adaptation of Pride and Prejudice by Sara Pascoe (Animal) with music by Emmy the Great. Once pay day comes around I’ll need to get some tickets booked.

4. Academy Awards this Sunday

It’s that time of year again! Who do we think will win? Will La La Land sweep the board as expected or are there a few surprises in store? Check out this year’s nominees.

I’ve managed to see quite a few of the nominated films this year (thanks Unlimited card!) and I’ve enjoyed all of them but Moonlight was incredible. If you haven’t seen it yet – GO!

Every year I run a prediction competition at work with an ‘Oscar’ for the winner. Want to do your own at home? I have used bidvine’s printable ballot but do a google search and you’ll find loads of options.
