My weekend in pictures: Birdwatching, visiting the Tower of London and Karaoke

Hi. Hope you all had wonderful weekends no matter what you go up to and that you managed to avoid the rain! Here’s what I got up to on my rather busy weekend…

We had planned for a quiet Friday night but on a quick glance at Facebook we saw that Attenborough Nature Reserve, a ten minute drive away, was offering a free evening birdsong walk in half an hour. Making an uncharacteristically quick decision we put our walking shoes on and jumped in the car. I’m really glad we did as it was a wonderful evening with great weather and informative and friendly guides. We spotted a Bittern too, quite a rare bird, which was exciting.

On Saturday, we drove down to London and met some friends of ours who were also in London. We met for brunch at the Covent Garden branch of The Diner. I had Red Velvet pancakes which were amazing. My only criticism would be that there were perhaps slightly too many berries on it – but that’s a good problem to have! We were about to go our separate ways when we decided to get a history fix and visit the Tower of London instead.

It is rather expensive to visit the Tower of London (£24.50 eek!) but Nial and I luckily had our Art Passes which gave us free entry saving us almost £50! I have been to the tower before and I would recommend it to anyone interested in British history who has a day to spare in London and a pair of comfortable shoes! The Tower is a really interesting place with lots of things to see from the contents of the various towers, wall walks, the royal armouries and crown jewels as well as outdoor areas, performance spaces and more. You could easily spend a whole day there and get your value for money. The queue for the crown jewels looked to be an hour long when we got there and just kept getting longer so get there early if you want to make sure you see the jewels.

After a pint and a game of cards with our friends to recover from all the walking, we headed back to our hotel (the easyhotel Old Street/Barbican) for a quick Superman-style change before heading out to our friend’s flat for birthday drinks and piñata fun. When we were suitably tipsy we headed to Karaoke Box in Smithfield where we’d booked a private karaoke booth for an hour. Karaoke was great fun and despite being a terrible singer I seem to have got into the spirit trying my hand at I Knew You Were Trouble – Taylor Swift (they didn’t have anything from 1989 – boo!), Song 2 – Blur, I Saw Her Standing There – The Beatles, and perhaps my favourites Be Our Guest from Beauty and the Beast and Circle of Life from the Lion King. Such fun! On Sunday we met our friends at Goswell Road Coffee before embarking on the 3 hour return journey home looking forward to hanging out with our rabbits Arthur and Tietjens again.
