I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship…

Ah Casablanca, what a film.

A month or so ago I was thrilled to be contacted by Smooth Radio with the news that I had won their competition to win four tickets to an outdoor screening of the 1942 classic at Hardwick Hall.

Now I’m a massive cinema fan and I particularly love old black and white films so this was absolutely thrilling news but what’s even better is that Hardwick Hall is one of my absolute favourite places. I couldn’t believe my luck!

We roped in Nial’s brother and his girlfriend to join us, packed a picnic and set off for the grand stately home which would be hosting the outdoor screening.

I was the only one who had seen the film before but everyone had a brilliant time and really enjoyed the film, despite the temperature dropping drastically later in the evening.

It was a fantastic opportunity to enjoy delicious picnic food (we had quiche, sandwiches, crisps and LOTS OF CAKE!) and watch a brilliant film in superb surroundings. What a treat. I’d only ever been to one outdoor screening before (Point Break/Hot Fuzz at Somerset House in London) but I will definitely try and make it to local screenings again in the future. It made for a wonderful Saturday night.

The screenings are put on by Quad cinema in Derby as part of their Summer Nights event.

I think my ultimate outdoor screening films would be either Strangers on a Train, Stand By Me or When Harry Met Sally.

What would yours be?
